My wife, Jennifer, is the original Dietgirl. And I mean that with total love and respect. The fact is that she has never been on a diet. So why is she my Dietgirl? Because she has learned about nutrition, educated herself on how the body works, and how foods affect one’s looks. And then she plans our meals to both taste great and be healthy. In addition, she exercises about a half hour a day 5 or 6 times a week.
Does she ever cheat? Well, when one considers dieting to really mean just eating healthily, there is no such thing as cheating. She knows what she is doing so she is able to have something once in a while that may taste better on her lips than it looks on her hips, but she knows how to factor it into her mix of foods and exercise.
I, on the other hand, know nothing about weight management or healthy living. Until we got married—nearly 30 years ago—I was basically a meat and potatoes kind of a guy. Fortunately for me, Jennifer was not only knowledgeable about food, but she was a gourmet cook! So, I, as a complement to her, put on 20 pounds within a few months of our marriage 🙂
My idea of a diet was to continue eating whatever I wanted, just a little less, but to exercise more. Interestingly enough, this worked when I was a teenager. But as I got older and my metabolism slowed—especially since I did not play ball anymore—I just could no longer slim down so easily.
Slowly, but surely, my wife began to educate me—even though I resisted. Then she got tough and stopped buying so much junk food. Then no junk food at all. Then no soda. Ugh! I know, other guys may have filed for divorce. But as much as I resisted it, I knew she loved me and was doing it FOR ME. Little by little I came around. I substituted Sweet n’ Low instead of sugar in my coffee. At the time that was a big concession! 🙂 Then I slowly phased out the artificial sweetener and began substituting seltzer for cola products. Today I have gotten rid of all extra sweets (other than a once in a while candy bar…shhhhhh!) and actually eat vegetable salads laced with fish, chicken or meat regularly for lunch. Pizza is mostly a thing of the past and when I do have carbs it is almost always only whole wheat. And, best of all, I have begun working out as well!
But it all starts with education and that is why my wife and I decided to create Dietgirl. Women, far more than men, worry about their curves and their weight. It can be stressful, depressing and debilitating. And the stress is worst when one follows blindly whatever she hears from friends or sees in the media. No more!
